I'm on a date at Farr's Ice Cream. The store has two doors. We met there. He parked on one side. I parked on the other. We meet. We have a great date. Enjoy good Ice Cream and great Conversation. We hug. The great date ends.
I'm excited as I leave. I get to my car...open my door...and all of a sudden I am seeing stars!
Somehow I totally smacked myself right in the middle of my forehead with my door so hard that I felt my teeth rattle!!!!!!

| This isn't my car, it's a much nicer version of the same car, but I wanted to give you a visual of what it looks like. Nice and BLACK. |
I almost passed out but luckily made it into my car and then laughed at my stupidity for a good 5 minutes. I looked around to see if anyone had seen what I had done, but it looked like I was the only witness.

I wasn't thinking clearly, but after laughing I remembered I told my sister I would call her after my date so I did. I talked with her the entire way home, making sure to emphasize the hilarious ending with me and my car. I must have sounded a little weird because she kept asking if I had made it home yet, and when we ended the call she told me to tell my roommate to keep an eye on me. I probably shouldn't have driven myself home.
I walk in and my honorary roommate Paisley gasps and asks what happened! All the roommies were in the living room and I guess I looked pretty darn funny. I had a good sized goose egg on my forehead! I got ice and stuck it on my head as Karli, my roombud, starts reading off the symptoms of a concussion from the Mayo Clinic site. As I think to myself (thoughts in bold)
Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include:
Some symptoms of concussions may be immediate or delayed in onset by hours or days after injury:
- Headache or a feeling of pressure in the head (check)
- Temporary loss of consciousness (luckily nope)
- Confusion or feeling as if in a fog (check)
- Amnesia surrounding the traumatic event (nope...I remember it pretty clearly :D)
- Dizziness or "seeing stars" (check)
- Ringing in the ears (check)
- Nausea or vomiting (check)
- Slurred speech (check)
- Fatigue (check - it is 10:00 at night! Bedtime for Lindsay)
Some symptoms of concussions may be immediate or delayed in onset by hours or days after injury:
- Concentration and memory complaints (check)
- Irritability and other personality changes (maybe...)
- Sensitivity to light and noise (check)
- Sleep disturbances (not yet...haven't slept...you won't let me...)
- Disorders of taste and smell (nope)
Lets be real here I experience many of these "symptoms" on a daily basis. I reassured them that I was fine. That it was alright to let me go to bed. I have hit my head so many times before that I was used to the symptoms. I was pretty sure I was okay, maybe had a mild concussion. But going to the doctor, as my dad always says, wouldn't do any good. They'd tell me, "Yep you have a concussion...get rest, avoid heavy concentration" and I can figure that treatment out without paying. :)
So now two days later I'm pretty sure I have a mild concussion. I've still got a good bump on my head, luckily without any bruising, I'm a little foggy and dizzy, but life has pretty much returned to normal.
The only difference is you can now say you know somebody who has the ability to give themselves a mild concussion just by hitting themselves in the head, with their car door! Aren't you lucky! :D
