Have you ever listened...I mean really listened to the lyrics of the hymn Be Still My Soul? I thought I had that is until this past Sunday. I was for some reason touched by the depth in the lyrics and the scriptures that are listed at the bottom of the hymn. Can you imagine a world where "grief is gone" and our "sorrows are forgot"? At this time of my life it is difficult, but I know those that have passed on before me are getting to experience this "joyful end."
Tonight I have been contemplating this hymn again. I hope you take the time to listen to a recording of the hymn and really read the lyrics. The comfort that music can bring is infinite.
Be still, my soul: The Lord is on thy side;
With patience bear thy cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In ev'ry change he faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: Thy best, thy heav'nly Friend
Thru thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: Thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as he has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: The waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: The hour is hast'ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: When change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
Psalm 37:3-9 & Doctrine and Covenants 101:14-16, 35-38
If you can get past the occasional talking and shouts, this is one of my favorite renditions of this hymn. It is a live version.
